Time-Lapse Filming for Documentary of Kenny Scharf: Mural on Houston & Bowery
Day 2

Day 1. Kick off ball.
I received a random text from my friend Tanya, that her filmmaker friend Malia Scharf is looking for a videographer to record time-lapse image of her father Kenny Scharf.
Confused for a moment (as I was just waking up), I said yes right away; I've known him as an essential part of Downtown 80's graffiti art scene, which I've been admiring since I was in my teenage angst in Japan.
The location of the mural was on Bowery St & Houston, right next to a big antique store.
People remember the wall as where Keith Haring's famous graffiti tribute was, or Shepard Fairy's graffiti being vandalized not so long ago.
Decided on the spot to do the filming, which is across the street from mural as the it was too huge to get the close-up of.
The week was very cold. Stood there, watching and recording shivering in cold, I wondered "Does this man get cold at all" "What's in his mind as he's painting this"?
Passion, Passion, Passion. .
It ended in 6 days, 1 day earlier than he planned. As I was watching the complete painting, I realized I've earned many good similar-sprited friends who are now familiar faces.
Of course, Malia Scharf, the director, Harry Geller, another great DP, Michael Alan, another great artist, Jim Kiernan, a photo journalist from Times, Dearraindrop (who had to go to Virginia after a few days, but helping Kenny out till then. His exhibition is at Hole Gallery in Soho now, with Kenny- I really have to go see!!), and also Maripol (another Downtown 80's icon).
When I take on jobs, it's sometimes just for money (unfortunately), sometimes for my own interest, sometimes for my friends, but this gig kind of came in as a new category... for inspiration.
And I'm just so proud to be a part of history. You don't get that so often. This industry is not so glamorous as many people think. (Agree?)
Art= Life could be a cliche, but I believe it. Artists are to throw their souls into their work, whatever the medium that can be (in my case it's filmmaking, which is much more time/money consuming...).
I used to love Basquiat's work (and still do, of course) and the way he lived his life: explosive, crazy, out of control, and pure. (I really need to watch "Radiant Child"...)
But as I grow older, I've come to realize that to "keep doing what you love, live your life to the fullest and longest" is the coolest thing (yup it's hard to do).
I think this documentary project has a lot of potential to grow into the great piece. Go Malia, you have so much fun ahead of you!
Oh yeah it's still up on Houston & Bowery. Article here with better picture set. But go there before it's gone!
A polaroid gift from Malia Scharf. Me and Kenny Scharf.

Off the Route Editing/Re-Write Session!
Wrapped on a long JPN documentary project (it's about an early film history and 1900's U.S. history),
and finally back to the development of my feature film "Off the Route".
Editing dialogues and actions, Re-writing of some scenes. Tightening up. Lots of Patience. This project's been taking way too long (almost obsessively), but so many people are already supporting me through this, loving the story, and just can't back off.
Since the first draft written 2 years ago, there's been so many good feedbacks (and as you know I'm stubborn sometimes...). Now things look more clearly, and I can read it separate from myself, looking at it more objectively and analytically. And my career and job situation are a little better, having more cooperation from people who are more tactful, influential, business-minded yet understanding and good spirited people.
So thank you everyone, those who's been supporting me through this painful process, and believing me in this...things are still in progress (really) and I'll make this happen. No, WE'll make this happen!

Social Network

Howl
Enter the Void

Learning AMERIKA!
Working on a documentary film about Early film history and U.S. history during that period, through a national broadcast.
Location scout with the director successfully finished (well, except one part, read till the end...), in 6 states in 8 days.
Due to the nature of project, can't write so much in detail but here are some photos ...it's really awesome project to work with though, learning a lot in every different ways.
History of film starts from Library of Congress (sorry about bad composition, I was multi-tasking! )
Classic...
At fire museum. Did you know fire engine didn't have an engine, but was carried by horses? Dig it?
I was so happy to be at Coney Island, as I haven't been there a while. Wow, it did change...shot from Wonder Wheel which is still intact... how can you call this a job? Well I was alone with the director (guy) who I met a few days ago. See, it is a job! I missed my rare chance to be there this summer because of another gig in San Diego then. Ironic.
And of course you can't pass this lady
Then, for the first time in my life visited Ellis Island Immigration museum. Immigrants are big part of the story, and it really made me think a lot, as I'm a immigrant myself...their lives are hard, but it's mostly by choice after all...they say. Some stayed, some left.
**************************************************************************************************
Speaking of immigration, I was taken to the police and got ticketed because I didn't carry a proof of my legal working status. Have to go to court in Pennsylvania next month. I'm sure it'll be fine but it's such a drag and downer (I have to go there at my own expense, pay for my lawyer, etc...). I want to write much more details about what's happened but I'll shut up for now. Wish me luck on not to get deported.
And coincidentally it was during the scout on an Native American related site where some wrong things happened in the past. (I'm working on Navajo's "forgotten people" project of my own) The person at the site told me a lot about this country from her point of view. It was quote by somebody famous I forgot but it goes something like this: "Road to hell is paved by good intentions".
I interpreted this way... Certain insecure people enjoy forcing their "civilized" way because they believe it'll do "savages" good, but it only does them harm and make "civilized" feel good about themselves.
**************************************************************************************************
Then the last destination was Utah. I've been to 30 some states and never had visited there. It was a beautiful place, especially since I haven't gone out of NY area for long time... just enjoyed the stretched-out plain filled with nothingness.
Why was I in Utah? Trains!
Wow, 10 Miles of Track in 1 Day? Such hard-workers.... oh, they are all immigrants.
The end of the day there was an amazing sunshine through thick dark clouds. Quite symbolic. I wish I had time and my new camera to take good photo for this. Well, I wait until I wrap my job in mid-November. It feels nice to be booked for a month. Donno afterwards. Well, the court, that's for sure.
Fin.

Canon 60D!
Yes, I just purchased it today.
I was thinking of getting whether t2i or 7D a couple of weeks ago, but my work schedule (I was on location scout around the States- 6 states in 8 days... to be posted on blog soon!) and B&H holiday schedule prevented me.
Lucky news then was that Canon 60D just came out, so I jumped onto it, as I have a couple of days off before going back to busy work schedule.
TEST SHOOT
As soon as I unpacked all the stuff I bought today, being so psyched to use it asap, I realized I have to charge the battery. And the sun was setting in half an hour. I ran out of my apt with half-charged my new baby who's not even ready, and went off to do some test shoot. So all below is the "default setting", just to see how "high def" it is... and didn't utilize the video mode yet.
I don't know how well this blog can show it after resizing... but here they are (in time order)...
A lot need to be learned soon!
Other new items I purchased... (I bought the sound recording device, Zoom H4N also). I realized I couldn't take picture of the camera I just bought, lol.
Just to honor him in retrospect, here's the very first thing I filmed in my life, with this Sony TRV-900...it got over 10000 reviews...
Wait, why is this so pixelated now? Is this because YouTube went HD??
Here's a better version... I'm thinking what to shoot first with Canon 60D now....
Will post it when I shoot some movie!

Yes, I'm finally a highly defined man, at least in technical sense.

Bye bye Mr.Sony. You've worked so friggin' hard... for 10 years! Remember the time I was working at movie theatre in Shibuya everyday throughout the summer to buy it...
